NVIDIA's GeForce RTX 4090 Can Reportedly Crack Your Passwords In Minutes

Apart from gaming and AI, Hive Systems Shows that complex password top GPUs eg NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090.

Modern-day GPUs from NVIDIA such as the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 GPU are capable of decrypting hashed passwords, crediting their FLOPS count.

You can't just go out and access someone's password with your gaming GPUs because it's not that easy. Hive Systems uses a hashing mechanism to ensure the integrity of passwords. For those unfamiliar, hashing is a security measure that involves converting passwords into a unique string of characters called a hash. This ensures that your data is not directly interpreted by an intruder and is a one-way function. Hive Systems measured how long it takes individual GPUs to decrypt hashed passwords, and the revealed results are really interesting.

This time, Hive Systems decided to use a different hashing algorithm, bcrypt, which is an advanced version of the one the company was using before. The firm decided to compare bcrypt with the older MD5 hashing function to see how the two stack up against each other, and for initial testing, Hive System used 8-characters, and here are the results. are

As you can see above, with MD5, NVIDIA's flagship GeForce RTX 4090 took an hour to crack the password, and surprisingly, 10,000 units of NVIDIA's A100s took just one second. MD5 seems to be an inferior hashing function compared to bcrypt, and testing done on it by Hive Systems confirms our point as the time taken to crack down passwords on bcrypt was significantly longer than MD5.

From one second, the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4090 now takes a full 99 years to decipher a password with bcrypt, which shows how strong bcrypt is in this department. It's important to note that cracking passwords isn't your everyday job, and firms have implemented several layers of security beyond just hashing functions to ensure your data is safe. Regardless, it's still interesting to see Hive Systems' benchmarks.
