Meet Vids, Google's AI-powered editor for the videos you hate to make
If you've ever used Microsoft's ClipChamp video editor, Google would like you to know that you now have another alternative: Google Vids, which combines Google's AI with your own documents to create short videos. will take advantage of the options.
Google thinks so highly of Vids that it will move it into the pantheon of other Google Workspace apps, including Docs, Slides and Sheets, the company said.
For whatever reason, Google isn't challenging directly. ClipChamp, Microsoft's most enjoyable video editoror Canva, another video and graphic content creation tool that has emerged as a popular alternative and AI-generated content. Instead, it's basically seeing video as one of those business tasks that has to be done, but doesn't require a lot of creativity — like a training video or customer testimonial.
Vids, then, look very familiar. Ask Vids to create a specific type of video and it generates a bunch of templates. The secret seems to be its ability to direct you to bits and pieces of information or documents you've already created or saved to help you create a video. (It's not entirely clear, as Google hasn't said much about it beyond the introductory video included at the bottom of this story.)
The UI, though, looks pretty standard, with the ability to drag and drop video clips and other content over the audio track.
It also appears that AI will be used to select from a collection of stock video, photos and music, as well as organize all the bits into a cohesive whole. There will also be an option to create an AI voiceover, or you can use your own.
Google Vids isn't here yet; The video below says it's “coming soon” to the workplace. Maybe we'll see more of this at the Google I/O conference in May.
