ASUS ROG Ally X Handheld Goes Official; Features AMD Ryzen Z1 APU , Bigger Battery, More RAM & Storage

ASUS has unveiled the all-new ROG Ally X gaming handheld, an improved iteration of the original model, powered by the same AMD Ryzen Z1 APUs. Last year saw the debut of the ASUS ROG Ally, which debuted AMD's latest Ryzen Z1 APUs, built on the Zen 4 core architecture. Now, a year later, ASUS is elevating the handheld gaming experience by introducing the beefed-up ROG Ally X model.

The ASUS ROG Ally X uses the AMD Ryzen Z1 APU series, but unlike its predecessors, it exclusively features the high-end Ryzen Z1 Extreme model. Designed for handheld devices, this top-tier APU boasts 8 cores, 16 threads, clock speeds up to 5.1 GHz, 12 RDNA 3 compute units, and 24 MB cache. With adjustable power consumption from 9W to 30W and improved cooling in ROG Ally X, users can expect high performance from this remarkably efficient chip.

ROG LX significantly increases both battery and storage capabilities. The battery gets a notable upgrade, boasting 30-40% larger capacities, considered a substantial improvement by ASUS, resulting in twice the gaming time compared to the original model. Additionally, storage now supports NVMe M.2 SSDs, including 2280 form factor drives from 4 to 8 TB. Additionally, the memory sees an improvement with support for the LPDDR5X-7500, further increasing the overall performance.

In terms of dimensions, the ASUS ROG Ally X is expected to retain the same chassis and screen size as its predecessor. Users can expect the familiar 7″ FHD panel with a refresh rate of up to 120Hz and a maximum brightness of 500 nits. Addressing a major concern from the previous model, ASUS has moved the SD card slot away from the internal heatsink to address the distortion issue, ensuring its elimination. I have teased other physical changes, details unknown.

Finally, the ASUS ROG Ally X will be offered in a black color variant. Since it targets handheld enthusiasts, the price is expected to be slightly higher than the $699 retail price of the original Z1 Extreme variant. ASUS is expected to reveal more details during the Pre-Computex 2024 event on June 2, so be sure to stay tuned for updates.
