AMD Sees Growth In x86 Client Market Share, Server Segment Post Record 33% Revenue Share

AMD's x86 market share saw continued growth with the server and client segments both gaining significant revenue shares in Q1 2024.

AMD's x86 CPU growth was boosted by strong 4th Gen EPYC and Ryzen 8000 “Mobile” CPU sales, while the desktop segment also grew.

Mercury Research shared the latest x86 CPU market statistics that show continued gains for AMD in both market and revenue share, both in the client and server segments. In Q1, AMD made several announcements and launched several important products in the client and server segments. The company saw a ramp-up of its Ryzen 8040 “Hawk Point” mobile APUs for laptops, a range of Ryzen 7000 and Ryzen 5000 mainstream chips with new Ryzen 8000G desktop APUs, an increase in EPYC 4th Gen users, and more.

All these developments have given AMD an even greater grip on the x86 segment and as of now, it has a total client market share of 20.6% and a revenue share of 16.3%. This is an increase of 3.6 points compared to the previous year.

Coming to market and revenue share per segment, AMD's server division grew to 23.6% with record revenue of 33.0%. This is a 5.6 point increase in market share and a 5.2 point increase in revenue share over the previous year. The desktop side also gained 4.7 points in market share and 3.8 points in revenue share compared to last year.

Finally, we have the mobile side which saw a 3.1 point increase in market share and a 4.0 point increase in revenue share. The mobile segment was the only one to see a decline compared to the previous quarter, mainly due to lower PC sales, but the ramp of the Ryzen 8040 series made up for it by gaining more through revenue share. AMD's Q1 2024 market share and revenue highlights are as follows:

  • Server revenue share rose 5.2% points Y/Y and 1.2% points Q/Q to a record 33%. As we noted during our first quarter earnings call, server CPU sales increased y/y driven by increased enterprise adoption and cloud expansion.
  • Client revenue share rose 3.8% points Y/Y and 1% points Q/Q to 16.3%, led by Ryzen mobile CPU sales nearly doubling year-over-year as the new Ryzen 8040 notebook ramps up.

Looking at unit share, AMD gained unit and revenue share both Y/Y and Q/Q.

  • Server unit share increased by 5.6% points Y/Y and 0.5% points Q/Q.
  • Client unit share increased by 3.6% points Y/Y and 0.4% points Q/Q.
  • Both desktop and mobile unit share increased Y/Y, while mobile unit share declined by 1% point Q/Q mainly due to lower low-end PC shipments.

Now as far as future CPU aspects of AMD are concerned, the company is. Computex is gearing up to unveil its next-generation Zen 5 product portfolio at 2024 which is expected to be included. Ryzen 9000 desktop CPUs codenamed Granite Ridgethe The new Ryzen AI HX APUs are codenamed Strix Point And The highly-anticipated 5th Gen EPYC line-up codenamed Turin.. All these chips are expected to take AMD to new heights so be prepared for a lot of action in the second half of this year.
