AMD Ryzen 8000F APUs Hit Retail In US: Ryzen 7 8700F For $299 & Ryzen 5 8400F For $189

AMD's Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F “iGPU-Less” APUs are now hitting retail shelves in the US at slightly lower prices than the “G” variants.

The AMD Ryzen 7 8700F APU retails for $299 US, while the Ryzen 5 8400F APU costs $189 US, a slightly lower price but the “G” variants look better.

Before that, we had Reported How the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F APUs started showing up at retail outlets but the prices listed were preliminary. Now, Amazon US has both chips listed with their official MSRPs which are, as expected, slightly lower than the 8000G variants.

In terms of price, the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F comes in at $30 US off $299 US, which is a bit of a savings but the lack of an iGPU means it defeats the purpose of the APU itself. The NPU is still onboard for this model, but mainstream PC owners will value the iGPU more than the NPU. As for the second model, it is priced at $189 US which is quite expensive.

The Ryzen 5 8600G retails for $229 US while the Ryzen 5 8500G retails for $179 US so you lack the iGPU and NPU and the only advantage over the 8500G is higher clocks. The price is odd and I don't see this chip pushing as many units in the DIY segment as the 8500G or 8600G/ While these APUs make little sense on the DIY side of things, they may have some value in the OEM space. Like these cases where there are very small margins.

AMD Ryzen 7 8700F APU Specifications

Starting with the specifications, the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F APU has 8 cores and 16 threads based on the Zen 4 core architecture. It has a base clock of 4.1 GHz and a boost clock of 5.05 GHz, which is slower in both base and boost than the Ryzen 7 8700G (-0.05 GHz Boost/-0.10 GHz Base). It has 16 MB of L3 cache and lacks an RDNA 3 iGPU.

AMD Ryzen 5 8400F APU Specifications

Similarly, AMD Ryzen 5 8400F has 6 cores and 12 threads based on Zen 4 architecture. It features a base clock of 4.2 GHz and a boost clock of 4.75 GHz (-0.25 GHz boost / +0.1 GHz base). The chip has 16 MB L3 cache with 6 MB L2 cache and no RDNA 3 iGPU. As for TDP, both chips are set at 65W. You can find some early reviews of both APUs here.

Interestingly, while the iGPU is missing, the NPU specifications are carried over from Non-F SKUs. In the case of the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F, you still get a 16 TOPS “XDNA” NPU while AMD's Ryzen 5 8400F lacks any NPU capabilities as the 8500F doesn't feature an NPU either. Both APUs will be compatible with AM5 and feature the same overclocking capabilities as the other APUs. The pair will also come with a Wraith Stealth cooler that will be more than enough for those 65W chips.

These prices will provide a reasonable option for existing AM4 owners to upgrade to a mainstream APU. Many AM5 motherboards can be bought for under $150 US and a good 32 GB DDR5 kit for less than $90 US so put it all together and you've got a good build in the sub $500 US range. Note that since there is no iGPU, users will still have to purchase a separate graphics card. And if you're aiming for the entry-level Radeon RX 7000 GPU, these start at around $229 US (RX 7600).. Both APUs will be readily available on May 14.
