AMD Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F are coming soon to the DIY market, iGPU-less APUs with slightly lower prices.

AMD Recently introduced its Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F APUs in China.. These APUs were later confirmed to be on their way out. Global markets, however, were limited to OEMs.. Well, it looks like AMD is reversing its decision to limit them to OEMs and is now planning a DIY launch, giving AM5 users more options in the mainstream and budget segment. are

Starting with the specifications, the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F APU has 8 cores and 16 threads based on the Zen 4 core architecture. It has a base clock of 4.1 GHz and a boost clock of 5.05 GHz, which is slower in both base and boost than the Ryzen 7 8700G (-0.05 GHz Boost/-0.10 GHz Base). It has a total of 16 MB of L3 cache and lacks an RDNA 3 iGPU.

Similarly, AMD Ryzen 5 8400F has 6 cores and 12 threads based on Zen 4 architecture. It features a base clock of 4.2 GHz and a boost clock of 4.75 GHz (-0.25 GHz boost / +0.1 GHz base). The chip has 6 MB L2 cache along with 16 MB L3 cache and no RDNA 3 iGPU. As for TDP, both chips are set at 65W. You can find some early reviews of both APUs here.

Interestingly, while the iGPU is missing, the NPU specifications are carried over from Non-F SKUs. In the case of the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F, you still get a 16 TOPS “XDNA” NPU while AMD's Ryzen 5 8400F lacks any NPU capabilities as the 8500F doesn't feature an NPU either. Both APUs will be compatible with AM5 and feature the same overclocking capabilities as the other APUs.

While the official prices for the DIY launch haven't been revealed yet, we can expect both models to be priced lower than the “G” SKUs. The Ryzen 7 8700G retails for $329 US so we can expect $299 US for the Ryzen 7 8700F while the Ryzen 5 8500G retails for $179 US so we can expect $149 US for the Ryzen 5 8400F.

These prices will give existing AM4 owners a reasonable option to upgrade to a mainstream APU. Many AM5 motherboards can be bought for under $150 US and a good 32 GB DDR5 kit for less than $90 US so put it all together and you've got a good build in the sub $500 US range. Note that since there is no iGPU, users will still have to purchase a separate graphics card. And if you're aiming for the entry-level Radeon RX 7000 GPU, these start at around $229 US (RX 7600)..
