AMD Ryzen 7 8700F & Ryzen 5 8400F “AM5” DIY Desktop APUs Listed By Retailers

AMD is indeed bringing its Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F “AM5” desktop APUs to the DIY retail segment without iGPUs.

AMD Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F desktop APUs are coming to AM5 DIY platforms, listed by several retailers.

it was Reported earlier That AMD will launch its recently announced Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F APUs in the DIY segment. That seems to be the case as several retailers have now listed the chips with introductory prices. Seen by lists Momomo_US and feature two retailers, PC-Canada and Slovenian retailer, Funtech. Both listed different types of box of chips so let's start with the first listings:

Now it is worth mentioning that the prices of AMD Ryzen 7 8700F and Ryzen 5 8400F APUs are still preliminary and the final prices will be much lower. Funtech has the Ryzen 7 8700F listed for €309.90 which is -5% less than the Ryzen 7 8700G at €325.20 while the Ryzen 5 8400F is listed for €199.90 which is slightly more expensive than the R580. We expect final prices to be about 5-10% lower than the MSRPs of the original “G” variants.

Starting with the specifications, the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F APU has 8 cores and 16 threads based on the Zen 4 core architecture. It has a base clock of 4.1 GHz and a boost clock of 5.05 GHz, which is slower in both base and boost than the Ryzen 7 8700G (-0.05 GHz Boost/-0.10 GHz Base). It has a total of 16 MB of L3 cache and lacks an RDNA 3 iGPU.

Similarly, AMD Ryzen 5 8400F has 6 cores and 12 threads based on Zen 4 architecture. It features a base clock of 4.2 GHz and a boost clock of 4.75 GHz (-0.25 GHz boost / +0.1 GHz base). The chip has 6 MB L2 cache along with 16 MB L3 cache and no RDNA 3 iGPU. As for TDP, both chips are set at 65W. You can find some early reviews of both APUs here.

Interestingly, while the iGPU is missing, the NPU specifications are carried over from Non-F SKUs. In the case of the AMD Ryzen 7 8700F, you still get a 16 TOPS “XDNA” NPU while AMD's Ryzen 5 8400F lacks any NPU capabilities as the 8500F doesn't feature an NPU either. Both APUs will be compatible with AM5 and feature the same overclocking capabilities as the other APUs. The pair will also come with a Wraith Stealth cooler that will be more than enough for those 65W chips.

These prices will give existing AM4 owners a reasonable option to upgrade to a mainstream APU. Many AM5 motherboards can be bought for under $150 US and a good 32 GB DDR5 kit for less than $90 US so put it all together and you've got a good build in the sub $500 US range. Note that since there is no iGPU, users will still need to purchase a separate discrete graphics card. And if you're aiming for the entry-level Radeon RX 7000 GPU, these start at around $229 US (RX 7600)..
