A Windows 11 'free' upgrade pushes users to buy a new PC

Upgrading from Windows 8 to Windows 10 didn't take much effort. But Microsoft has fought an uphill battle trying to convince users to upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11, and it looks like the company is stepping up the pressure — even if your PC isn't eligible.
Reddit user Woopinah9 reported that Microsoft displayed a full-page ad for Windows 11 on his Windows 10 PC while he was working. Issue? Even the ad admitted that the PC was ineligible for an upgrade. The clear message was that the user needed to buy a new PC.
Here's the situation right now: Windows 10 will reach end of support on October 14, 2025. Extended support will be offered to customers. to allow them to go through with it, but Microsoft didn't say how much it would charge. Businesses must pay. $61 per year. And the mess that was (and is) Windows 11 hardware requirements This means that there will be some users who fall through the cracks, as a Reddit user apparently has.
So what should consumers do? A whole host of Reddit commenters noted the discrepancy.: Microsoft encouraging them to upgrade to the latest cool thing, then telling them they don't have it. In a way, that's the message the PC industry delivers with each new generation upgrade: Look how fast This A PC runs faster than a three-year-old or a five-year-old. Go buy it!
Microsoft's Instructions for next Big thing, an AI PC, are equally ambiguous: a Copilot key, an NPU, and the Copilot itself. Microsoft has not yet confirmed the requirement that a PC be able to process trillions of operations per second (TOPS), the unit of measurement for AI processing. And, of course, as most silicon vendors will tell you, millions of “AI PCs” have already shipped. Powerful GPUs that can perform AI operations. In place of NPU. But they aren't really AIPC…or are they?
The switch to the next major version of Windows 11 and AI PCs could certainly prove to be significant. But if Microsoft is trying to convince users that they need to abandon their investment in Windows 10 and upgrade to an AIPC running Windows 11, the company needs to convince users to do so. Need to be convinced about the benefits of And Tell them specifically what they will need to achieve it. So far, the company has done neither.
